"Travel Tips: Summer Intersession in London"

  • Be ready to participate in all class events Participation is required for all out of class events, including events sponsored by Accent. Cutting these events for any reason will result in lower grades and is inconsiderate of your hosts and colleagues. Class begins early each morning, so be sure to allow for enough sleep each night. Please allow extra time to get to the play performances – if you miss the opening curtain, you are not allowed in until intermission.
  • Be prepared to “go with the flow.” Be ready to try English food and experience English customs. Try out new things and remember that you are a guest in someone else’s country. Even the language can be different, so see your instructors if you need a translation. Books on English customs and English slang are available in the Accent library or in the major bookstores (such as Foyle’s) in the nearby Charing Cross Road.
  • Be ready to share your living space. You will be sharing living space and bathrooms as well as bedrooms during your two-week stay. London is very expensive, and because we aren’t spending much time in the flats, sharing is the best solution. Be patient with each other, and work out a rotation system for kitchen and bath if necessary. We hope that you will make some new friends for life during the experience!
  • Bring a minimum of expensive personal items. The Accent Center has computers available for students to use, and the student flats are not wired for internet use. So, leave your laptop at home. (Faculty bring their laptops to use for lectures; in an emergency, you may borrow one.) Also, remember that most American cell phones will not operate overseas.
  • Bring any medications you might need. The British do not have as many over-the-counter drugs as we do. If you think you may need a cold medication or allergy medication, bring it along with any prescription drugs. Thanks to the Medical Insurance you will purchase for $1.50/day (see program costs), you will have access to a very nice doctor’s office near the British Museum, should you need it. If you need to go there, tell your instructors during business hours, if you can, in order to save a trip to the ER (or, what the British call, the A&E).  However, if you need emergency services, call your instructors, and we will get you there.
  • Remember you are traveling in a larger city. Use street smarts: go in a group or in pairs, be wary of strangers on the street, and don’t carry unnecessary cash or credit cards. Before leaving for London, make photocopies of your credit cards and passport and leave them with your parents or a close friend. Use ATM machines around the city to take out cash as you need it and to receive the best exchange rate.
  • Bring clothes to accommodate a range of temperatures and activities. London weather is unpredictable, so think layers, and be sure to bring a scarf and an umbrella. Also bring shoes that will be comfortable for walking.
