Preparing to leave K-State
The following information is for all students, faculty, and staff
permanently leaving Kansas State University, including those who are graduating,
transferring to another school, or otherwise terminating their affiliation with the university. Retired K-State faculty are automatically able to keep their eID, as well as access to K-State e-mail provided by the university.
Before you leave, follow these steps
You should do the following before you leave K-State:
- Forward your e-mail. Sign in at eid.k-state.edu to set up e-mail forwarding.
Any messages sent to your K-State e-mail address after that point will be redirected to the forwarding address you specify.
Former employees who receive e-mail
that is intended for current university personnel or functions should be redirected to the appropriate university office or personnel.
- Review your mailing lists and unsubscribe from any you don't wish to remain on.
If you don't unsubscribe, messages from the lists you subscribe to will be
forwarded to you along with all your other e-mail (provided you turn on e-mail forwarding), but you may not be able to post
to the lists from your new e-mail address. See How can I unsubscribe from mailing lists?
- Copy any files you are entitled to keep. In addition to files on your office workstation and the central
Unix system (including personal webpage files), don't forget to copy any e-mail messages or folders you are entitled to
keep, such as personal e-mail. Also see What happens if I leave and don't copy my files?
- Remove software on your personal computer that was received under a Kansas State University
site license or volume purchase agreement, including but not limited to K-State's antivirus software and
others on the K-State software licenses page.
See Software received from K-State.
- If you live in a residence hall, point your computer back to the Microsoft Windows Update Service.
See Windows updates.
FAQs: eIDs and passwords
How can I keep my eID active when I leave K-State?
You must do one or more of the following to ensure it will remain active:
- Turn e-mail forwarding on. As long as your e-mail is being forwarded and does not bounce back, your eID is considered active.
- Change your eID password within five years.
What happens if I leave and don't copy my files?
- Once you are no longer enrolled at, employed by, or associated with K-State, the university
will notify you via your K-State e-mail address that access to your e-mail and other resources is going to be removed soon.
You then have two weeks to make any copies needed.
After your access has been removed, there is a $50 fee for one week of access to copy any data you forgot.
- 180 days after your student or employee affiliation with K-State ends,
your files, personal webpage, and e-mail associated with your eID will be destroyed and removed from the central
backup systems.
Who do I call if I need help?
Contact the IT Help Desk, 214 Hale Library,
helpdesk@k-state.edu, 785-532-7722.
Faculty/staff may wish to contact their departmental support staff for assistance first.
FAQs: E-mail and mailing lists
How can I continue using my K-State e-mail address?
You won't be able to use it to send e-mail. However, you should do the following to
ensure it will continue to accept and forward your e-mail to another address:
- Turn e-mail forwarding on.
- Ensure your e-mail is being forwarded to a valid destination address, and does not bounce back.
How can I change my forwarding address after I leave K-State?
You will continue to have access to your eProfile page to set up e-mail forwarding and to change your password
as long as your eID has not been inactive for five years.
You can change your e-mail forwarding any time at eid.k-state.edu.
How do I unsubscribe from mailing lists?
Use one of these two methods:
- Go to listserv.ksu.edu/web and click the
Subscriber's Corner link. This shows all the K-State lists you subscribe to, and you can unsubscribe
from any or all lists.
- E-mail listserv@listserv.ksu.edu with this command format in the message: UNSUB listname
(where "listname" is the list's ID — for example: UNSUB HIST251B). When you unsubscribe from a list,
LISTSERV will notify you by e-mail that you've been removed.
For more information about mailing lists, see the LISTSERV mailing list website.
What should I do about the mailing lists I own?
- Contact the other list owners to let them know you are leaving, and remove yourself as an owner.
- If you are the only owner of a list, ask one of the subscribers to be the new owner, then add then as an owner
before you remove yourself.
- If one person is going to take over all your lists, send e-mail to
listhelp@k-state.edu and tell who will be responsible for your lists.
- If a list is no longer needed and both it and its archives can be deleted, notify
listhelp@k-state.edu to request that the list be removed.
FAQs: IT newsletter
Can I continue to receive the weekly InfoTech Tuesday newsletter?
- If you're already subscribed to the InfoTech Tuesday newsletter and
have set your e-mail to forward to a new address, the weekly e-memo with the latest headlines will be forwarded to you.
- K-State's IT newsletter has open subscription, so anyone in the world can subscribe to it from a non-K-State e-mail
address. Subscriber choices include just the weekly e-mail memo (with latest headlines) and/or
a variety of RSS feeds (all the news or just specific categories). For details, see the
Newsletter subscriptions webpage and follow the links.
FAQs: Internet access
How can I get access to the Internet after I leave K-State?
Only current K-State faculty, staff, emeritus faculty, emeritus staff, and enrolled students may use
the dial-in service provided by K-State. If you need an Internet connection, you should find
an Internet Service Provider in your area.
FAQs: Software received from K-State
Can I continue to use software I've received from K-State?
No. When you leave K-State, you must remove any software you've received under a
K-State software license
or volume-purchase agreement. This includes, but is not limited to, K-State antivirus software
and all course-related software you may have received through your department.
Using that software after you leave K-State is a violation of the university's software license agreement.
How do I remove K-State's antivirus software?
Any one of the following methods can be used.
FAQs: Windows updates
Students leaving the K-State residence halls should remove the connection to K-State's
Software Update Service and point directly to Microsoft's Update Service. Use this process:
- Download K-State's SUS Removal file and save it to your computer's desktop.
- Double-click the "SUSRemoval.exe" file on your desktop. This will reset your computer to
point to the Microsoft Update Service.
FAQs: Use of university computing labs and K-State InfoCommons
Can I still use the university computing labs?
No. Your eID will not be able to sign in on the lab computers after you leave K-State.
Computers in the university computing labs are for K-State faculty, staff, and students
with an active K-State eID. Children under 18 who are not students at K-State may not use the computers, and individuals
may be asked to produce a valid K-State ID as proof of their age and enrollment status.
Can I still use the K-State InfoCommons?
Yes. Computers in the K-State InfoCommons
in Hale Library are available for public use.
