William Fortney"Part of my professional obligation as a veterinarian at Kansas State University has been to educate the public on various health issues that may affect their pet and to inform them of any new advance in veterinary health care.

"Without the help of Cheryl May's media relations staff, this community education effort would be extremely difficult if not impossible. For over 25 years I have worked with this group producing literally hundreds of news releases. The results have been numerous local, regional and national press articles plus scores of telephone interviews.

"The entire news release process has always been painless and refreshing. Unlike some media experiences, the K-State mediarelations reporters are actually on your side. They want to capture your message and meaning, and foremost they are promoting you, your message, and Kansas State University and not their personal agenda.

Veterinarian Dr. William Fortney is a pet expert, from basic care tips to significant research. He has been the source for many articles from media relations and for stories in publications such as Newsday, Prevention, USA Weekend and The Boston Globe.

Wayne Goins"This is an open letter to express my sincerest thanks and appreciation for all the work you have done in an effort to help promote my latest book, "Charlie Christian: Jazz Guitar's King of Swing," due for release in August 2005. Michelle Hall and Keener Tippin have done an incredible job delivering timely press releases on the book's debut and their efforts were rewarded immediately with the publication of articles in the Daily Oklahoman, North Texas E-News, and the Topeka Capital-Journal, not to mention a full review in one of the biggest jazz journals in the nation, Jazz Improv magazine.

"And of course, I received immense praise from my colleagues throughout the university for my writing efforts as a result of your campus-wide press Web-mail distribution and hard copy review in an issue of K-Statement. What was even more rewarding though was the glowing letters received from my department head of music, as well as the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, who both acknowledged the positive press I received as a result of your outstanding journalism on my behalf. It is largely due to your early efforts in the promotion of my book that I am already receiving a positive buzz from my constituents in anticipation of my scholarly work. I anxiously look forward to the next project that I can send your way inhopes that I might once again benefit from your generosity toward my writing efforts. Continued success to all of you and a hearty congratulations on being the premier media outlet for Kansas State University. I am honored to have my name and work affiliated with your organization.

Wayne Goins, director of jazz and associate professor of music, is the author of "Charlie Christian, Jazz Guitar's King of Swing," released August 2005, as well as "The Jazz Band Director's Handbook: A Guide to Success" and "Music, Moodstates, and the Emotional Response to Music: Pat Metheny's 'Secret Story.'" Dennis Kuhlman"I am most grateful for the role that K-State media relations has played in supporting publicity projects for K-State at Salina. From hometown news releases about our students to stories about faculty research and achievements, I know that the media relations staff will bring to any project a wealth of expertise and professionalism, along with a tremendous spirit of collaboration.

"Although the staff's support of our college comes on a frequent, regular basis, our partnership was greatly enhanced through K-State's involvement in the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer. Throughout the planning and implementation of this international event, we called on their office to help us leverage the maximum publicity for K-State. As a result of their involvement in this major-scale project, we were able to put K-State in front of media from around the world, winning our university and students recognition in countless publications and markets, both near and far.

"Cheryl and her staff have gone the distance for us time and time again. I know that when a public relations opportunity or challenge presents itself, her office will enable us to make good decisions and promote K-State to our fullest ability."

Dennis Kuhlman, dean of the College of Technology and Aviation, K-State at Salina, led a team of his employees to work with Virgin Atlantic for the successful GlobalFlyer project. Mission control was housed at K-State-Salina for the event. GlobalFyer resulted in hundreds of media hits in national and international newspapers, magazines, radio and television.

Philip Nel"I have worked with Media Relations many times, and they have always been courteous, professional, and effective. I've worked with them on press releases for English Department's annual Cultural Studies Conference, and on releases in connection with my books. Certainly, the subject matter of the books -- I have one on Harry Potter and another on Dr. Seuss -- Helped generate publicity. But their work has helped, too. For instance, I doubt that anyone would have noticed my book on The Avant-Garde and American Postmodernity had they not sent out a release.

So, when they asked me to write a blurb for their website, I said 'sure!' Here's why you should work with Media Relations. In a time when state legislators are looking for ways to trim university budgets, it is urgent that we get the word out about the good work we do her at Kansas State University. We work hard, and many of us do outstanding, innovative work in ourfields. Legislators adn the general public need to know. Media Relations can help. If you've something you think may be newsworthy, drop them a line."

Philip Nel is an associate professor of English. He has written books on Harry Potter and Dr. Seuss and has been quoted extensively in the media, including, most recently, USA Today, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Orlando Sentinel, Detroit News, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Indianapolis Star.

Robert Shoop"It has been my experience that the major media outlets on the east and west coast generally work under a very short time line. Consequently, it is much more covenient for them to use local experts as resources in the preparartion of their stories or news features. K-State is fortunate to have a large number of nationally recognized scholars. However, in order for our faculty members to be featured in fast-breaking stories there must be a process that allows the national press a user-friendly process for reaching them. Over the past 15 years, I have found Cheryl May and her staff to be incredibly helpful. The department of media relations is a wonderful resource for every faculty member who wishes to quickly and easily gain access to a national audience."

Robert J. Shoop, professor of education law and senior scholar, leadership studies, consults regularly with school districts, universities and corporations in the areas of risk management, negligence, standard of care, boundary issues, and harassment and abuse prevention. He is a frequent guest on national radio and television talk shows including The Today Show, ABC's 20/20, MSNBC with Lester Holt and CNN, and has been quoted most recently in the Chicago Tribune, Orlando Sentinel and Detroit News.

"Thank you for taking the time to put together templates and find examples for me. They have been a great deal of help as I work to improve my writing for press releases. My biggest struggle had been perfecting the format, and your templates laid it out perfectly and simply for me. It was exactly what I needed. I really appreciate your help and effort. Thanks again."

Leslie Siebert, sophomore in philosophy and intern in marketing and promotions, K-State Student Union.

Diane Swanson"The media relations office at Kansas State University is a real gem -- one of the best of its kind. Ms. Cheryl May, its talented director, is highly skilled at getting campus news covered by local, regional, national and international media outlets. Due to her vision and the expertise of her friendly and responsive staff members, many of my projects have received broad media coverage. For example, three years ago in the wake of the corporate scandals, I launched a national campaign for better business ethics education. The timely and accurate coverage of this initiative by K-State's media department has helped immensely in garnering and maintaining campaign support in national and international circles. In the process, more people have become aware of business ethics in the curriculum at K-State.

"We can be proud of our media relations office, which functions as a powerful ambassador and advocate for K-State constituents. I highly recommend its services to faculty, administrators, staff members, alumni, and students who seek excellent news coverage of their endeavors."

Diane Swanson is the von Waaden Business Administration Professor and the founding chair of the Business Ethics Education initiative. Her initiatives and research have been featured in regional and national publications such as the Christian Science Monitor, the Topeka Capital-Journal, San Francisco Business Times, Fox and ABC News affiliates, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Business News and the Dallas Morning News.

"On behalf of our entire department we want to thank each of you for the energy and assistance that went into our news conference. Without your expertise and commitment to helping us succeed we know that the event would not have been possible. Your patience as we worked through each nuance from the press release to the media packet was greatly appreciated. We know firsthand how lucky K-State is to have you! Thank you for your support and we look forward to working with you in the future."

Chuck Werring, assistant vice president for institutional advancement, is directing the $100 million Jardine Apartments redevelopment project. Articles about this undertaking have been featured in the Manhattan Mercury, Topeka Capital-Journal and on WIBW 13 News.
