CHERYL MAY
Director of media relations

Cheryl MayAs director of media relations it is my job to make sure the media, bloggers and the public know what is going on at K-State. I'm a former science writer and I really enjoy sharing news about the latest research results from K-State's top scientists, and about upcoming events, student and faculty achievements and more. My job is to use whatever methods of communication work best. This means staying aware of new media to see if there are more effective ways to communicate with various audiences.

In January 2009 we started a Twitter account, and @k_state_news was recognized within just a few months as one of the top 100 EDU tweeters by OnlineDegreeWorld. Also in January we launched an accompanying blog, K-State News Insider. Both have given our office options even beyond what I had envisioned.

These, along with RSS feeds, targeted e-mail lists, a Web site, Facebook page, YouTube channel and direct one-to-one contact with media help us get the message out.

My primary writing responsibilities include crisis communications and news from the campus administration, and I enjoy writing about research when the opportunity arises. I edit the news prepared by our research news and features coordinator and the assistant coordinator. Each morning I send the day's news via an e-mail list, K-State News.

My experience at K-State includes science writer and writer/photographer for the College of Engineering and the Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station. I have been elected to three terms on K-State's Faculty Senate.

Before coming to K-State my work as a newspaper reporter in California earned awards for investigative reporting. I've also been a magazine editor, and later a free-lance writer and photographer. I've written two books, "Legacy, Engineering at Kansas State University"; and "Cattle Management," a textbook for Reston Publishing Co. (Prentice-Hall).

My master's degree is in journalism and mass communications from K-State, where I earned membership in Phi Kappa Phi. My bachelor's degree is from the University of Missouri, Kansas City.
