KATIE MAYES
Campus News Coordinator and K-Statement editor
As campus news coordinator, I help publicize K-State news and events that appeal to the larger community, in addition to regional and state audiences.
On a daily basis, I use my skills as a former reporter to help each department and program I work with get a feel for what the media and public may be interested in. I promote everything from the arts to student life at K-State.
As a key player in K-State's educational campaign about the National Bio and Agro-defense Facility, I actively promoted K-State's scientific experts in animal health, agriculture and veterinary medicine, and worked to ensure K-State's supporters were being heard in the media. I wrote several articles and fact sheets, and organized a speaker's bureau to ensure that K-State was answering the public's questions about the proposed facility.
In addition to promoting K-State to an external audience, I am also editor of K-Statement, the staff and faculty newsletter. As editor, I coordinate the publication's content and visual elements on a weekly basis. During the summer of 2009, I oversaw the publication's transition to an exclusively online product.
I am a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, and hold a bachelor's degree in political science with an emphasis on international relations. In college I was a stringer for multiple newspapers in Southern California, including The L.A. Daily News. I came to Kansas in 1999 to work for the Manhattan Mercury, where I spent seven years as a reporter and editor. The Kansas Press Association and the National Newspaper Association has honored my work, including my forays into investigative journalism. Prior to coming to the media relations office, I was the coordinator of public and alumni relations at K-State at Salina.
