So if youre picking a summer program, are there structured physical activities for all kids. One of the dangers I think were running into now is that we have elite sport programs and we have sedentary programs but there may not be opportunities for all kids to be physically active. So you may choose for example a summer program that may be involved in the arts or computers or something that your child is interested in, which is great, but then are they then getting an opportunity to be physically active.

Kansas State University recently received a $900,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to study how out-of-school programs can be used to help prevent children from becoming overweight. This four-year program gets underway at the start of the 2005-2006 school year. Dr. David Dzewaltowski is the director of the project, and says the study focuses on a mixture of good nutrition and daily physical activity. The sound bite is 25 seconds and the outcue is getting kids moving.
(Dzewaltowski :25 In the project were kicking off in this new grant is to look at the impact of offering a healthy snack in after-school time, offering a physical activity experience of at least 30 minutes for all kids that . So were talking about sport and game experience that are playing and getting kids moving.
Dzewaltowski says there is a need for out-of-school programs that focus on physical activity because now days, kids are not going home after school and playing in the neighborhood. He adds the number of overweight children has tripled in the last 30 years, so its important for all kids to get exercise every day.
