K-STATE AT SALINA AVIATION STUDENTS PRACTICE FLYING OVER MOUNTAINS: Summer can be an "elevating" experience for aviation students at Kansas State University at Salina. Troy Brockway, associate professor of aviation at K-State at Salina, took a group of aviation students west this summer to fly high in the Rockies. It's the ninth year Brockway has conducted a class on mountain flying.

K-STATE GREEK RECRUITMENT ON STRONG PACE FOR 2008-2009: Greek recruitment at Kansas State University is on a strong pace for the 2008-2009 school year. Involvement in sorority recruitment has hit a record high, while fraternity recruitment continues to be steady, said Scott Jones, director of K-State Greek affairs.

WORKS FROM SHAWNEE PUBLISHER TO GO ON DISPLAY AT K-STATE'S BEACH MUSEUM OF ART: The Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art at Kansas State University will have the exhibition "A Family Affair: Selections from the Zanatta Editions Archives" Sept. 19 through Jan. 4, 2009.

DIGITAL ETHNOGRAPHY OF MAINE'S WABANAKI INDIANS BY TWO K-STATE ANTHROPOLOGISTS AVAILABLE ONLINE AT NATIONAL PARK WEB SITE: Two Kansas State University anthropologists are the authors of the first-ever cultural history of the Wabanaki, indigenous peoples traditionally inhabiting what is now protected as part of Acadia National Park on the coast of Maine.

EFFORTS BY K-STATE STAFF AND FACULTY PUT TORNADO DAMAGE IN PAST: Just 10 weeks after a tornado swept across the campus, Kansas State University returned to full operation in time to welcome students to a new semester.

K-STATE'S TWO GILMAN SCHOLARS BRING UNIVERSITY'S TOTAL TO 22: Kansas State University students Jennifer Crainshaw, Olathe, and Samuel Brinton, Perry, Iowa, have received the 2008 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, an honor worth up to $5,000 for study abroad. Crainshaw will study in Ghana and Brinton in China.

THEFT OF ITEMS FROM AUTOMOBILE INCLUDED PERSONAL DATA: Eighty-six Kansas State University students are receiving letters from the Division of Continuing Education advising them that papers with their names and Social Security numbers were stolen from a parked vehicle last week.

K-STATE AT SALINA TO HELP CELEBRATE CHEROKEE CULTURE: Kansas State University at Salina will be represented at the 56th annual Cherokee National Holiday Saturday, Aug. 30, in Tahlequah, Okla., capital of the Cherokee Nation.

K-STATE DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC RECOGNIZES STUDENT EXCELLENCE: The department of music at Kansas State University has recognized several students for excellence with special honors, including the department's top undergraduate scholarship.

K-STATE GRADUATE TEAM PLACES IN COLLEGIATE WEED SCIENCE CONTEST: A graduate student team from Kansas State University was first in the team sprayer calibration event and was the third place overall graduate team at the North Central Weed Science Society Collegiate Weed Science Contest, Aug. 14, in Carlyle, Ill.

DENNIS LAW TO STEP DOWN AS DEAN OF K-STATE COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, PLANNING AND DESIGN IN AUGUST 2009: Dennis L. Law, dean of the Kansas State University College of Architecture, Planning and Design, will step down in August 2009 after 14 years in that post. He plans to return to full-time teaching for several years before retiring.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY PHOTOGRAPHS COMING TO K-STATE'S BEACH MUSEUM OF ART: "First Person: National Geographic Society Photographs" will be on display Sept. 12-Dec. 7 at Kansas State University's Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art.

K-STATE RESEARCHERS AWARDED NEARLY $1 MILLION TO TEST REMEDIES, INVESTIGATE LINK BETWEEN E. COLI AND DISTILLERS' GRAINS: A research team headed by Kansas State University E. coli O157:H7 expert T.G. Nagaraja has been tapped by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to study both the connection between feeding distillers' grains and E. coli 0157:H7 in cattle and several strategies to reduce the presence of the naturally occurring pathogen in the animals.

NEWS TIP: K-STATE FOOD SAFETY EXPERT SAYS CONSUMERS CAN DECIDE FOOD IRRADIATION ISSUE: Food irradiation of fresh produce is an additional tool that can help reduce the threat of foodborne illness -- but it is not a magic bullet, according to Doug Powell, an associate professor of food safety at Kansas State University.

ACCREDITATION A PRIORITY AT K-STATE AT ALL LEVELS: From the institutional level to individual programs and services, achieving and renewing accreditation is a priority and an ongoing process at Kansas State University, according to M. Duane Nellis, provost and senior vice president.

K-STATE TO INTRODUCE NEW E-MAIL AND CALENDAR SYSTEM: Kansas State University is replacing its university e-mail and calendar systems, Webmail and Oracle K-Calendar, with the Zimbra collaboration suite. The change will be introduced in stages, beginning in January 2009.

RAPID TEST FOR PATHOGENS DEVELOPED BY K-STATE RESEARCHERS COULD BE USED TO DETECT DISEASES USED BY BIOTERRORISTS: Dangerous disease often spreads faster than it takes to diagnose it in the lab. To remedy that, researchers at Kansas State University have developed a test to bring that time from days down to hours.

K-STATE'S MOVIES ON THE GRASS SERIES OPENS THE FALL SEMESTER: Kansas State University will again convert Coffman Commons, the grassy slope south of Hale Library, into a free outdoor movie theater with the fourth annual Movies on the Grass series.

RAWSON TO BEGIN PHASED RETIREMENT FROM K-STATE; SHUBERT SELECTED AS SUCCESSOR: Thomas M. Rawson, Kansas State University's vice president for administration and finance, has announced his intent to step down from his post effective at the end of the calendar year.

K-STATE'S ADVANCED MANUFACTURING INSTITUTE HELPS KANSAS COMPANY INCREASE PRODUCTION AND EFFICIENCY WITH NEW MACHINE: The Advanced Manufacturing Institute, also known as AMI, at Kansas State University has developed a stair nosing machine for Wichita-based Balco Inc., a world leader in the manufacturing of architectural products.
