K-STATE INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE AND PRODUCT DESIGN STUDENTS EARN HONORS FROM THE KANSAS CITY ARCHITECTS, DESIGNERS, DEALERS AND REPRESENTATIVES: Several interior architecture and product design students at Kansas State University earned honors in the annual Kansas City Architects, Designers, Dealers and Representatives Regional Student Competition.

K-STATE AT SALINA PROFESSOR RECEIVES FELLOWSHIP TO ATTEND HOLOCAUST EDUCATION SEMINAR: Patricia Ackerman, assistant professor of arts, sciences and business at Kansas State University at Salina, has received a fellowship to attend the 2008 Memorial Library Summer Seminar on Holocaust Education.

K-STATE COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE'S 2008 E.R. FRANK AWARD TO BE PRESENTED TO GEORGE KENNEDY: A former longtime faculty member of Kansas State University's College of Veterinary Medicine is receiving the 2008 E.R. Frank Award from the college and its Veterinary Medical Alumni Association.

GOLF MARATHON AT K-STATE'S COLBERT HILLS GOLF COURSE TO HONOR EARL WOODS, BENEFIT EARL WOODS YOUTH ACADEMY AND ESTABLISH BASEBALL SCHOLARSHIP: A special event at Kansas State University's Colbert Hills Golf Course Saturday, May 31, will honor the legacy of noted K-State alum Earl Woods in several ways.

K-STATE'S DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE AWARDS 2008 HEINTZELMAN PRIZE TO STUDENT FROM KANSAS CITY, MO.: Whang Jin Suh, a master of architecture graduate from Kansas City, Mo., has received the 2008 Heintzelman Prize from Kansas State University's department of architecture.

FORT RILEY MENTORS GUIDE K-STATE ROTC CADETS TOWARD SUCCESS AS OFFICERS: Field-grade officers at Fort Riley have teamed up with the Army ROTC program at Kansas State University to give senior cadets a leg up on leadership as well as Army culture.

K-STATE STUDENT FROM LENEXA EARNS $10,000 SCHOLARSHIP FROM STUDENTS IN FREE ENTERPRISE FOR LEADERSHIP, COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Nick Gay, senior in electrical engineering, Lenexa, has been selected as the winner of the Jules and Gwen Knapp Students in Free Enterprise Ambassador Scholarship. Gay was one of three finalists for the award, which was presented at the organization's national exposition May 13-15 in Chicago.

K-STATE ASSOCIATE DEAN OF ENGINEERING RECOGNIZED BY AMERICAN SOCIETY OF HEATING, REFRIGERATING AND AIR-CONDITIONING ENGINEERS: Byron Jones, associate dean for research and graduate programs and director of the Engineering Experiment Station for Kansas State University's College of Engineering, will receive the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers Standards Achievement Award June 21.

ONLINE ENGINEERING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSES OFFERED IN SUMMER BY K-STATE: Kansas State University's College of Engineering has teamed with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers to offer six-week professional development online courses in engineering topics for the summer term.

K-STATE JUNIOR FROM SHAWNEE SAYS UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROJECT TEACHES DISCIPLINE, OFFERS EXPOSURE TO THE RIGORS OF THE PROCESS: Bobby Gomez, junior in elementary education, Shawnee, is working on the research project "We Are the Community: Principles of K-State" as part of a K-State program that supports undergraduate researchers. The Developing Scholars Program offers underrepresented students research projects with faculty mentors.

K-STATE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT FROM TOPEKA RESEARCHES HOW PERCEPTIONS OF FINANCES DETERMINE WHO TAKES OUT PAYDAY, TITLE LOANS: Tiffany Harris, a sophomore in life sciences from Topeka, is working with Farrell Webb, associate professor of family studies and human services, to find out why people accept the financial risks of a title loan or payday loan.

LEASURE HALL ON K-STATE CAMPUS CLOSED THROUGH NEXT WEEK: One of Kansas State University's oldest buildings, Leasure Hall, will be closed until next Wednesday or Thursday. Steve Broccolo, emergency management coordinator in Public Safety, ordered the closing of the building today due to a concern over asbestos exposure.

K-STATE EXPERT OFFERS FOOD SAFETY TIPS FOR CAMPERS: Warm weather means camping season and time to eat around the campfire. But before eating at the camp cookout, a Kansas State University food safety expert recommends bringing kitchen food safety steps to the campground to keep campers healthy and happy.

K-STATE TO OFFER ONLINE COMPUTER CLASSES FOR SUMMER 2008 TERM: Kansas State University is offering online courses in computer science during the summer. These short courses are introductions to computer applications such as spreadsheets, databases and word processing that are used in most office settings.

K-STATE POLLUTION PREVENTION PROGRAM PAIRS ENGINEERING, ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES STUDENTS WITH KANSAS BUSINESSES WANTING TO CONSERVE RESOURCES, REDUCE WASTE: If a business followed the recommendations of some students in a Kansas State University program, the 30.4 million gallons of water saved through pollution prevention projects would equate to approximately 30.4 football fields filled to a depth of one yard.

HUMANE TREATMENT OF CATTLE VITAL TO SUCCESS OF LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY: Humane treatment of cattle is important in the livestock industry because it is not only the right thing to do, it positively impacts the bottom line. That's the word from veterinarian Dr. Dan Thomson, who leads Kansas State University's Beef Cattle Institute.

MEGAN CLARK TO DIRECT KANSAS ACADEMIC DECATHLON ASSOCIATION: Megan (Christensen) Clark has been named the new state director for the Kansas Academic Decathlon Association which sponsors academic competition each year at Kansas State University. Clark succeeds Diane Hansen as state director effective July 1.

COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AT K-STATE HONORS OUTSTANDING FACULTY OF SEMESTER, ADVISER OF THE YEAR: Kansas State University's Cathie Lavis, assistant professor of horticulture, forestry and recreation resources, and Telmo Amado, adjunct associate professor of agronomy, have been selected as the College of Agriculture's outstanding faculty of the 2008 spring semester.

K-STATE'S COLLEGE OF HUMAN ECOLOGY RECOGNIZES 21 OUTSTANDING GRADUATING SENIORS: The College of Human Ecology at Kansas State University has honored 21 of its graduating seniors with Outstanding Senior Awards. The award recipients are selected from each academic area the college offers. The selections are made by faculty and are based on the students' academic achievements, leadership, participation in service on campus and in the community, and their professional potential.

STUDENT HOMECOMING COMMITTEE MEMBERS SELECTED TO ASSIST K-STATE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION WITH 2008 HOMECOMING ACTIVITIES: Twelve Kansas State University students have been selected to serve on the 2008 Homecoming Student Committee. They join 15 returning students who will be organizing Homecoming Week, which will be Oct. 19-25 and culminate with the football game against the University of Oklahoma Oct. 25.

K-STATE'S JENNA KENNEDY FINDS SUCCESS AS STUDENT, RESEARCHER AND VOLUNTEER: More than 100 seniors from the Division of Biology at Kansas State University will graduate Saturday, May 17, at commencement for K-State's College of Arts and Sciences. Among them will be Jenna Kennedy, Hoxie, who is earning a bachelor's degree in microbiology.

K-STATE'S DIVISION OF BIOLOGY HONORS EIGHT STUDENTS: Kansas State University's Division of Biology is recognizing eight students for their outstanding academic performances and contributions to the division.

K-STATE ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING STUDENT FROM ANDOVER HELPS K-STATE COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTER RENOVATE ITS SOLAR ADDITION: Brad Lutz, Andover, has helped a learning center associated with Kansas State University renovate its solar facility to serve as a regional demonstration of passive and active and solar technologies.

K-STATE DOCTORAL STUDENT RECEIVES FELLOWSHIP TO ATTEND INSTITUTE ON YOUTH VIOLENCE PREVENTION: A Kansas State University graduate student has received a fellowship to attend the 2008 Summer Institute on Youth Violence Prevention, Aug. 3-8, at the University of California at San Diego.

MORE THAN 2,900 K-STATE STUDENTS ARE CANDIDATES FOR GRADUATION: More than 2,900 students are degree candidates at Kansas State University. The class of 2008 is the 141st to graduate from K-State since the first class graduated in 1867.

ENDOWMENT FUND, WINTER FAMILY AND K-STATE STUDENT UNION AWARD WINTER SCHOLARSHIP: Four Kansas State University students have each received the $1,000 Stanley L. Winter Alpha Tau Omega K-State Union Leadership Scholarship. The four recipients are the most ever for the annual scholarship.

WEFALD ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT PLANS: Kansas State University President Jon Wefald announced today his plans to retire at the end of the 2008-09 academic year. Wefald has served as the 12th president of K-State since being appointed by the Kansas Board of Regents in July 1986.

BEN CHAMPION TO DIRECT K-STATE'S MULTIPLE INITIATIVES IN SUSTAINABILITY: Ben Champion has been appointed to the newly formed position of director of sustainability for the university, tasked with developing a university-wide approach for addressing sustainability at K-State.

K-STATE SUSTAINABILITY RESEARCH WEB SITE TO ADDRESS ISSUES FOR SCHOLARS, STUDENTS AND THE PUBLIC: Kansas State University's Melody LeHew envisions a Web site where scholars collaborate and read the latest research in sustainability, where students investigate how to make sustainable decisions in the workplace, and where the public go to understand how to practice sustainability in their lives.

K-STATE'S BRI IS NATIONAL BIOSAFETY AND BIOCONTAINMENT TRAINING PROGRAM'S FIRST DESIGNATED TRAINING FACILITY IN NATION: Kansas State University's BRI -- Biosecurity Research Institute -- is the National Biosafety and Biocontainment Training Program's first designated training facility in the nation.

K-STATE SOIL JUDGING TEAM TAKES FIRST AT NATIONAL CONTEST: The Kansas State University Soil Judging Team won first place overall at the 2008 National Soil Judging Contest. It is the first time K-State has won the national contest.

TWO K-STATE GRADUATE STUDENTS JOIN YOUTH FORUM TO SUGGEST SOLUTIONS FOR 10 PROBLEMS FACING THE WORLD TODAY: Two Kansas State University graduate students in agricultural economics have been selected to participate in the 2008 Copenhagen Consensus Center Youth Forum in Copenhagen, Denmark, May 25-30.

MORE THAN 50 STUDENTS AT K-STATE NEW MEMBERS OF PHI BETA KAPPA: New members of Kansas State University's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious academic honor society, have been selected.

K-STATE DANCE STUDENTS TO PERFORM ORIGINAL WORKS: Original dance works will be performed by Kansas State University dance students at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, in East Stadium's Purple Masque Theater. The performances are free and open to the public.

K-STATE'S JOURNALISM SCHOOL RE-ACCREDITED: The A. Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Kansas State University has been re-accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. The Council met in Arlington, Va., May 2 and voted unanimously in favor of re-accreditation.

K-STATE'S SILVER KEY NAMES NEW MEMBERS FOR 2008-2009: Kansas State University's Silver Key, a sophomore leadership honorary emphasizing community service, has selected its members for 2008-2009.

THREE K-STATE BUSINESS STUDENTS FROM GREATER KANSAS CITY EARN SCHOLARSHIPS FOR PROFESSIONAL SELLING SKILLS: The RPS Financial Group Inc. of the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network has awarded scholarships to three business students in Kansas State University's College of Business Administration as part of a sales competition conducted in the department of marketing's professional selling and sales management course.

STUDENTS EARN HONORS AT K-STATE'S LITTLE AMERICAN ROYAL: Livestock fitting and showmanship skills earned several Kansas State University students honors at K-State's 80th annual Little American Royal.

K-STATE SENIOR FROM NORTH DAKOTA IS COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE'S STUDENT OF THE YEAR; STUDENTS FROM CENTRALIA AND PHILLIPSBURG WIN MONTHLY HONORS: Rebecca Tokach, a senior in animal sciences and industry, has been named the Kansas State University College of Agriculture's Student of the Year. The class of 2008 is the 141st to graduate from K-State since the first class graduated in 1867.

K-STATE STUDENTS SHARING THEIR TALENTS AT SPRING COMMENCEMENT CEREMONIES: Several students at Kansas State University will perform music or deliver speeches at upcoming K-State commencement ceremonies.

GUEST CRITICS TO LEAD K-STATE ARCHITECTURE FIFTH-YEAR DESIGN STUDIO FORUM: Three distinguished practitioners and academics will lead the first architecture Fifth-Year Design Studio Forum at Kansas State University's College of Architecture, Planning and Design. The guest critics are Robert McCarter, Dwayne Oyler and Karl Puljak.

K-STATE STUDENT FEATURED IN MILITARY SPOUSE MAGAZINE: The April 2008 issue of Military Spouse magazine included a student profile on Leigh Garza, a junior in pre-professional business administration at K-State. FIVE K-STATE ENGINEERING STUDENTS EARN NATIONAL TAU BETA PI SCHOLARSHIPS: Five students from the College of Engineering at Kansas State University have been awarded $2,000 Tau Beta Pi scholarships.

K-STATE ENGLISH CLASS TO PRESENT NOTED JOHN FORD PLAY MAY 10: Aside from the works of William Shakespeare, most people generally aren't familiar with English Renaissance plays. A Kansas State University English professor and his students plan to change this.

K-STATE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY TO CELEBRATE COMPLETION OF PROJECT CREATING WRITTEN HISTORY OF 'LOST' KANSAS TOWN OF BROUGHTON: The history department at Kansas State University will have a Broughton Project Celebration and Wrap-up for all students and former residents of the Kansas town of Broughton who have contributed to the project. The celebration starts at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, in the Cottonwood Room at the K-State Student Union.
