ITALIAN RESEARCHER TELLS AUDIENCE AT K-STATE THAT WORK IN ANIMAL MODELS SUGGESTS A VARIANT OF MAD COW DISEASE MAY BE TRANSMISSIBLE TO HUMANS: The classical form of mad cow disease and a variant manifest themselves differently, but research suggests that the variant may also be transmissible to humans, according a researcher speaking at Kansas State University.

FINANCIAL THERAPY CLINIC, TO BE OPENED BY K-STATE'S INSTITUTE OF PERSONAL FINANCIAL PLANNING IN MANHATTAN, FIRST OF ITS KIND: Kansas State University's Institute of Personal Financial Planning will soon open what is thought to be the first clinic to offer financial therapy: the blending of financial counseling with marriage and family therapy to help individuals, couples and families struggling both financially and emotionally.

K-STATE TO HOST SECOND ANNUAL CONFERENCE FOR LLAMA AND ALPACA OWNERS: Llamas and alpacas will be the focus for the Second Annual Conference for Llama and Alpaca Owners at Kansas State University's College of Veterinary Medicine Friday, Dec. 5. K-STATE'S ADVANCED MANUFACTURING INSTITUTE HELPS GREAT BEND COMPANY OPTIMIZE PRODUCT: A Great Bend company that manufactures front-end loaders and backhoes has received assistance from the Advanced Manufacturing Institute at Kansas State University in predicting the performance of its loader brackets.

K-STATE'S ARMY ROTC WILDCAT BATTALION REMAINS STRONG, ENROLLMENT UP 20 PERCENT: Lt. Col. George Belin, professor of military science and head of Kansas State University's Army ROTC program, says a change in recruiting strategy over the last couple of years has had better than expected results for K-State's Army ROTC Wildcat Battalion. Fall 2008 enrollment in the program is up to 155 cadets, an increase of 20 percent.

ARTIST ROGER SHIMOMURA TO SPEAK ABOUT HIS WORK AT K-STATE'S BEACH MUSEUM OF ART: When Roger Shimomura was a child, he was among the 120,000 Japanese-Americans who were forced to relocate to U.S. internment camps after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Shimomura's family spent two years looking out through a barbed-wire fence at Camp Minidoka in south-central Idaho.

K-STATE PHYSICS PROFESSOR FINDS A WAY TO STEER ELECTRONS IN A MOLECULE USING LASER PULSES, A METHOD THAT COULD BE USED TO CREATE CUSTOM-MADE CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS: Theoretical physicist Uwe Thumm and his colleagues Feng He and Andreas Becker not only work with some of the smallest molecules in the universe, but they now have found a way to control the motion of the molecules' building blocks, electrons and nuclei.

INFECTIOUS DISEASE EXPERTS CONVENE AT K-STATE FOR TOP LEVEL SYMPOSIUM ON EMERGING INFECTIONS: Many of the world's top experts in infectious diseases are on the Kansas State University campus this week for a symposium "Emerging Infections: A Tribute to the One Medicine, One Health Concept."

K-STATE RESEARCHERS FIND THAT POLLUTION OF FRESHWATER BY NITROGEN AND PHOSPHOROUS COSTS THE UNITED STATES AT LEAST $4.3 BILLION ANNUALLY: Pollution by phosphorous and nitrogen isn't just bad for lakes, streams and other bodies of fresh water. According to researchers at Kansas State University, it's also bad for Americans' pocketbooks.

KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY MOVING AHEAD WITH K-STATE OLATHE INNOVATION CAMPUS: Voters said "yes" last week to a sales tax supporting the Johnson County Education Research Triangle so Kansas State University is moving swiftly ahead with its Olathe Innovation Campus, one of three initiatives supported by the one-eighth cent tax.

K-STATE PROVOST DUANE NELLIS ELECTED TO LEAD NATIONAL HIGHER EDUCATION ASSOCIATION’S CHIEF ACADEMIC OFFICERS GROUP: M. Duane Nellis, provost and senior vice president at Kansas State University, was elected Nov. 10 as the new chair for the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges -- NASULGC -- Council on Academic Affairs. The election came at the association's 121st annual meeting being held in Chicago.

K-STATE VETERINARIAN TESTING WHETHER COMMON DRUG COMBINATION GIVEN TO HORSES AFTER SURGERY COULD CAUSE MUSCLE TREMORS, SEIZURES: No veterinarian wants to see a patient experiencing muscle tremors, difficulty standing or seizures. When that animal can weigh as much as a thousand pounds, it also becomes a safety concern for the patient and the caregivers.

K-STATE ALERTS AND REVERSE 911 SYSTEM TO BE TESTED NOV. 19: Kansas State University's K-State Alerts and reverse 911 system will both be tested at approximately 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19.
