PORTION OF K-STATE'S MID-CAMPUS DRIVE TO BE CLOSED OCT. 1 FOR PARKING GARAGE CONSTRUCTION: A portion of Mid-Campus Drive on the Kansas State University campus will be closed for several hours Wednesday, Oct. 1, to accommodate a large concrete pour for K-State's new parking garage.

K-STATE PROFESSOR LEADS SPECIAL COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY FOR ALASKA GRADUATES: The ceremony had all the pomp and circumstance associated with any graduation. Well, maybe not any graduation. This one took place this summer against the backdrop of a log home and the blue Alaska sky, where two Kansas State University distance education graduates marked the completion of their master's degrees with the help of Gayle Doll, K-State assistant professor in gerontology and director of the Center on Aging.

K-STATE BRINGS BLUEGRASS FAMILY BAND CHERRYHOLMES TO MCCAIN AUDITORIUM: Cherryholmes, a high-energy, bluegrass family band, will perform at Kansas State University's McCain Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, as part of the 2008-09 McCain Performance Series.

BOB KRAUSE TO DEVOTE FULL-TIME EFFORTS TO INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS: Kansas State University announced today that Bob Krause, who has been serving as vice president for institutional advancement and director of intercollegiate athletics since April 2008, will be devoting his full time efforts to his responsibilities as director of athletics beginning Oct. 1.

SOLOMON FAMILY K-STATE'S 2008 FAMILY OF THE YEAR: When Lawrence Strouts graduated from Kansas State University in 1949, he probably didn't know he was setting a family precedent. Nearly 60 years and 12 K-State graduates later, the Lawrence and Betty Strouts family will be recognized for their loyalty to the university by being named K-State's Family of the Year for 2008.

STAN WEBER TO BE NEWEST MEMBER OF K-STATE'S ACCOUNTING HALL OF FAME: Stan Weber, vice president and chief financial officer of Tower Properties in Kansas City, Mo., and color analyst for the Kansas State University Sports Network broadcasts of football and men's basketball, will be inducted into the K-State department of accounting's Accounting Hall of Fame.

FLU VACCINE CLINICS TO BE OFFERED AT K-STATE'S LAFENE HEALTH CENTER: The influenza vaccine is available at Kansas State University's Lafene Health Center, with flu vaccine clinics to be Thursdays until Thanksgiving break or until supplies last.

K-STATE POSTS RECORD ENROLLMENT TOTAL OF 23,520: Kansas State University's campus this fall is more diverse than ever. The university's record fall enrollment of 23,520 includes more students of color, especially Hispanic and African American students, and more international students as well as a record number of freshman students.

BIG 12 ENGINEERING CONSORTIUM TACKLES WORK FORCE NEEDS: Providing enough engineers to fill the work force needs of nuclear energy facilities in the Midwest is a challenge facing colleges of engineering across the Big 12 Conference.

K-STATE EXPERIMENTS WITH SMALLER CLASS SIZES FOR FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS: Kansas State University is working to make the transition from high school to college easier by implementing first-year seminars: special classes for incoming freshman that are capped at 22 students.

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH AT K-STATE INCLUDES ENCUENTRO 2008 AND SPECIAL CULTURAL EVENTS: Highlighting Hispanic Heritage Month activities at Kansas State University will be Encuentro 2008 and several special cultural events. The theme of this year's celebration is "Building a Strong Foundation for Latino/a Higher Education."

K-STATE STUDENT USES HIS KNOWLEDGE OF SPANISH TO ASSIST IN THE COURTROOM: Ronnie Hernandez, a Kansas State University sophomore in criminology and pre-law, is getting a jumpstart on his law career by working as an English/Spanish interpreter for the Riley County District Court.

K-STATE GEOGRAPHY STUDENTS EARN HONORS FOR PAPERS, POSTERS: Several Kansas State University students in geography have received awards for papers or posters they presented at the 2008 meeting of the Great Plains-Rocky Mountain Division of the Association of American Geographers. K-STATE'S LAFENE HEALTH CENTER RECEIVES ACCREDIATION FROM THE ACCREDITATION ASSOCIATION FOR AMBULATORY HEALTH CARE: Lafene Health Center at Kansas State University has achieved accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. Lafene Health Center is the health care facility for K-State students.

K-STATE'S CHAPTER OF MORTAR BOARD AMONG NATION'S BEST: For the fifth time in the last six years, Kansas State University's chapter of Mortar Board has received the Golden Torch Award. The honor, for the 2007-2008 school year, recognizes the chapter for excellence and as one of the best chapters in the nation.

RURAL RETAILING SCHOLAR TO LECTURE SEPT. 23 AT K-STATE: Laura Dunn Jolly, a nationally known scholar in the fields of retailing and merchandising and dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences at the University of Georgia, will lecture present a lecture at Kansas State University Tuesday, Sept. 23.

MASTER OF DRY STONE CONSTRUCTION, SCULPTURE TO LECTURE AT K-STATE: Sculptor and environmental artist Daniel E. Snow will present "Listening to Stone" at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Kansas State University. The lecture will be in the West Ballroom of the K-State Student Union.

K-STATE PROFESSOR'S USDA RESEARCH SHOWS MAD COW DISEASE ALSO CAUSED BY GENETIC MUTATION; NEW TEST CAN DETECT MUTATION BEFORE BREEDING CATTLE: New findings about the causes of mad cow disease show that sometimes it may be genetic. "We now know it's also in the genes of cattle," said Juergen A. Richt, Regents Distinguished Professor of Diagnostic Medicine and Pathobiology at Kansas State University's College of Veterinary Medicine.

K-STATE DOCTORAL STUDENT RECEIVES FELLOWSHIP FROM AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPY FOR THE SECOND TIME: Adriatik Likcani, a doctoral student in marriage and family therapy at Kansas State University, has received a second fellowship of $25,000 from the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy.

GARRISON KEILLOR TO PERFORM AT K-STATE'S MCCAIN AUDITORIUM: Garrison Keillor, host of National Public Radio's "A Prairie Home Companion," will entertain as part of Kansas State University's McCain Performance Series. K-STATE PSYCHOLOGY PROFESSOR'S RESEARCH SUGGESTS THAT CIGARETTES' POWER MAY NOT BE IN NICOTINE ITSELF BUT IN HOW IT ENHANCES OTHER EXPERIENCES WHILE SMOKING: A Kansas State University psychology professor's research suggests that nicotine's power may be in how it enhances other experiences. For a smoker who enjoys drinking coffee, the nicotine may make a cup of joe even better. And that may explain why smoking is so hard to quit.
