FAFSA

Applying for financial assistance almost always begins with filling out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). When you submit a FAFSA, you are applying for federal loans, grants, and work-study funding.

The U.S. Federal Department of Education uses the information you provide on the FAFSA to determine your eligibility for federal financial assistance. Many states, including Kansas, also use the FAFSA to determine your eligibility for state aid programs.

As the name implies, the FAFSA is free! There are no fees to process the FAFSA, whether you apply online or on paper.

The easiest way to complete and submit a FAFSA is online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Since this electronic process uses built-in edits, the number of potential errors in completing your FAFSA is greatly reduced. You and your parents (if you are claimed as a dependent on your parents' taxes) need to obtain a personal identification number (PIN) from the U.S. Department of Education in order to apply online. To obtain a PIN or check your PIN status, visit www.pin.ed.gov.

You can also fill out a paper version of the FAFSA. You can get one from your local public library, your high school counselor’s office, or the K-State Office of Student Financial Assistance.

The results of your FAFSA are electronically sent to K-State if you provide the K-State Federal School Code on your FAFSA. K-State’s Federal School Code is 001928.
